New Oxwall Forum from webmaste's blog

When WWIIRESW started way back in 2011 the Social Go forum was "all the rage".    Some of us had seen it used by " WWII Re-enactment Magazine".  Whilst Facebook was available too, the Social Go forum offered something unique and people in the South West were happy to join and be part of the WWII Re-enactment South West community.  The forum numbers rapidly grew and by June, at the very first Battle of Britain Living History Show, about ¾ of the re-enactors there were part of the new forum.

Whilst forum numbers continued to grow, there were many who simply never showed up again.  So the reality was a forum of 400 with perhaps 10% being forum users.  Over the years Facebook took on a bigger role in the forum communication.  Also newsletters were started, primarily to keep those, who neither Facebook nor Social Go, up to date with events.
At one time, Social Go went from version 1 to Version 2 and everyone had to re-join a new forum because Social Go could or would not move everyone across.  This was not a good experience, bearing in mind that the forum was being paid monthly.  The cost of the forum was more than the cost of the website and subsequently it was decided to host our own forum using Oxwall Open Source Software.

Hosting your own software does mean that we need people in the WWIIRESW forum who are capable of helping and dealing with issues as they arise.  Some of it is beyond our capability, but the Oxwall team is very helpful.
