On the 1st June, there will be a big event happening at Upottery Airfield, Devon, which will include the Round Canopy Jump display team, boarding a C-47 (Drag Em Oot) at the airfield. It will be the first time a parachute drop has departed from the airfield since June 5th 1944. As you can imagine, this is quite a special event.
To outline, the C-47 will arrive at Upottery the day before, stay overnight, and then shall depart from the airfield the following day. Those who are jumping from the aircraft, will be wearing the uniforms and kit of the US Paratroopers who left the airfield in 1944 (101st Airborne). The airfield is most notably famed for it is the airfield of which Easy Company, 101st Airborne departed from. This unit was made famous by the HBO series, Band of Brothers.
The outline will be that on the 1st June at 08:45, the jumpers will march through the village to the airfield, and get ready alongside the aircraft. At 10:15, the first two ‘sticks’ will depart the airfield, fly to Carentan, where they will jump, before the C-47 returns to Upottery to refuel. The second jump will depart approx 13:15 and fly to Carentan where it will perform another drop.
This will be a unique opportunity for some fantastic photos, and to be part of something very special.
If you would like to know more, please do get in touch. We are looking to invite as many as possible to the event, and there will not only be the Nissen Hut museum to have a look around, but also a small group of reenactors (myself included) on hand to answer any questions etc.
I have created a group which you may join if interested -
